Gen-set targets increased flexibility for contractors - portable generator from Multiquip Inc

The new GDP-5000H high-cycle portable generator from Multiquip Inc., Carson Calif., is designed as a dual-purpose generator that offers both 60 Hz and 180 Hz outputs for construction applications. This dual-output design allows a user to operate regular power tools on 60 Hz and high-cycle concrete vibrators on 180 Hz power output simultaneously, the company said.

"High-cycle generators with an output of 180 Hz are, by design, application specific," said Juan Quiros, product manager, pumps and generators for Multiquip. "The new GDP-5000H high-cycle generator, with its dual output, is designed to provide flexibility for its user. The target market for this new generator includes concrete and other construction contractors, as well as rental yards."

A recoil start Honda GX-340 gasoline engine rated 11 hp at 3600 rpm powers the GDP-5000H generator. The engine incorporates an automatic idle control designed to reduce noise and fuel consumption. A 5 gal. shock-mounted fuel tank allows the unit to run eight hours uninterrupted, according to Multiquip. An automatic oil alarm shuts down the engine if the oil level falls below a safe operating level.

The Honda engine drives a Denyo two-pole, brushless-type revolving field generator. "The voltage regulation on this unit is very tight, only [+ or -]3 percent," according to Quiros.

The generator also includes ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI), built into each unit as standard equipment. Circuit breakers are also included to protect the generator from overloads and to safeguard power tools and lights.

The 180 Hz generator has a maximum continuous and rated output of 5 KVA. The unit has a rated voltage of 230 V with a rated current of 12.5 amps. Rated speed for the three-phase, four-wire generator is 3600 rpm. Power output is through three NEMA 7410, 230V, 180 Hz twist-lock Va.c. receptacles. These receptacles allow a contractor to operate three high-cycle concrete vibrators at once, the company said.

The 60 Hz generator has a maximum rated output of 4.0 kW with a continuous rated output of 3.6 kW. The unit has voltage outputs of 120/240V and rated current of 30/15 amps respectively.

Three 60 Hz Va.c. receptacles include: one NEMA 5-20R, 120 V duplex 20 amp receptacle; one NEMA L5-30R, 120 V 30 amp twist-lock receptacle; and a single NEMA L6-20R, 240 V, 20 amp, twist-lock connector.

The gen-set has dry net weight of 230 lb. and includes a wraparound frame that protects vital components and separate control panels for the 180 and 60 Hz generators. A wheel kit designed to allow easy mobility on the jobsite is also available.
