Compact generator system - Power Technology Inc. launches RoadPower system - Brief Article

Power Technology, Inc., has developed a compact generator system designed to convert any engine into an a.c. generator. The new RoadPower system has a generating capacity of 5 kW and is available in 120 V, 60 Hz or 230 V, 50 Hz configurations. Applications for the system include standalone engines used on worksites such as oilfield pumps or mobile vehicles requiring a large supply of clean a.c. power to run onboard computers, medical equipment, tools, etc.

The system is comprised of a variable speed alternator, converter box and remote control panel. The alternator bolts directly onto the engine while the converter and control panel can be remotely mounted. The system uses precision circuitry designed to regulate voltage to within [+ or -] 3 percent and frequency to within [+ or -] 0.01 percent, which the company said eliminates power spikes that could damage sensitive electronics.

The alternator requires 1.7 hp per kW of load and has a continuous operating speed of 8000 rpm, with 10,000 rpm available for short periods. Power output remains stable regardless of speed. The entire system weighs about 50 lb. Special features protect against high voltage, overheating, short circuits, low battery voltage and excessive load.
